Imagine a modern Betty Page in parachute trousers, ski-couture jacket, gaiters boots and balloon bag walking on the street in a rhythm such as she is just listening to Mile Davis' Kind of Blue. When she comes along, a captivating scent of tobacco, honey, patchouli, raspberry, camomile makes you sure: she is a kind of jazz.

The crossover of different styles - the 'jazz' of looks, is a main trend that will hold on even for spring/summer 2010.

In fall/winter 2009/10, Diesel for example has dedicated the Black Gold collection entirely to 'Kind of Blue' by Miles Davis; a record, that can be named a 'miles'tone in music history. The studio album by the US jazz musician was originally released in 1959.

Formal Business Attire- For women this constitutes business suits (a matched skirt and jackets) and, in most workplaces, pantsuits (matched pants and blazer). Closed-toe shoes (no sandals), blouses, hose and conservative hair, jewelry and makeup are expected.
Corporate Casual Looks-Working women have interpreted this to mean everything from shorts to sundresses, but in its most literal sense it means "smart business." Dressy pants and a blouse, sleek jersey knits and skirts and tops are all examples of corporate casual. Denim, T-shirts and flip-flops -- all '90s phenoms -- are only acceptable in the most casual of work environments.

Don't know where to start working on your career image? You're not alone because most companies don't have specific guidelines about what to wear to work.

One of the best clues to company dress codes is what your boss wears. Just think about the styles that the highest-level woman in your organization wears and use them in your wardrobe. Does she wear mostly skirt suits? Or does she rely on pantsuits? Does she wear hose or bare legs? Open-toed shoes or pumps?

If you don't have a reliable female executive to emulate, then trade on what the men are wearing. If they don suits and ties every day, your best bet is to use pantsuits and skirtsuits: the most formal of business looks.

Your goal to getting dressed for work is to project a professional, competent image, regardless of your employement level or career path.

The styles, colors, lengths and fit of your fashion choices will speak volumes about your ability to do your job. If you are concerned about your career, you'll be more concerned with looking professional than looking cute or trendy.

In general, the more distracting a piece of clothing or jewelry is, the less appropriate it is for office wear.

More guidelines to looking polished:

Color plays a big part in professional image. Traditional career colors include red (aggressive), navy (trustworthy), gray (conservative) and black (chic). Most of these colors work well in pantsuits, skirts and shoes and mix back with softer feminine colors that are appropriate like ice blue, lilac, soft pink and ivory. Loud colors like hot pink and wild prints are much riskier in the office, but some creative types can still pull them off.
Jewelry that jangles (chandelier earrings, stacks of bangles) is distracting. Opt for stud earrings or single bracelets.
Slouchy handbags look sloppy. Choose structured styles that project an organized image.
Most of what constitutes a polished image is in the details: manicured nails, run-free hose, scuff-free shoes, neat hair.
Fit is everything when you are talking about tailored work clothes. Pants should be fitted, but free of visible panty lines. Skirts, especially straight styles like pencil skirts, should be loose enough to sit down in comfortably. Jackets should be able to be buttoned. And blouses shouldn't gap between buttonholes.
Designer labels are great, but heavily logoed clothing and accessories look cluttered and frivolous in the work place. A small designer bag is fine; a logo trench coat looks ridiculous. Choose well-made items that are free from obvious designer labels for the most professional look.

Every woman has something about her body she'd like to hide, whether it's heavy thighs, a pudgy tummy or a too-round bottom. With just a few visual tricks, your problem areas will disappear and let your true beauty shine through!

Bottom-heavy

If your hips are wider than your shoulders and your thighs are round, you have a classic pear-shaped body. Dressing is a snap if you remember to accentuate the positives: a shapely waist, delicate upper body and attractive shoulders and arms.

Bottoms

Avoid anything too tight.
A-line skirts that hit around the knee area are ideal because they draw attention away from problem areas. Miniskirts are generally a bad idea because they accentuate heavy thighs.
Pant waists should fall somewhere below the natural waistline for a better fit. A straight or slightly bootcut leg is the most flattering. Avoid patterned or light-colored pants. Skip fussy details like big cargo pockets, rouching or excessive zippers around the hip area.
Shorts can be tricky, but for workouts and casual wear choose lightweight, loose-fitting shorts (no bike shorts). Slimming side stripes on shorts can give the illusion of sleekness.

Tops

Avoid too-baggy tops or too-tight tops: the looser tops will make you look large all over, the tight tops will make you look out of proportion to your hips. Look for fitted -- not skintight -- T-shirts (something with some stretch) and button-front tops. V-necks, turtlenecks and open collars all call attention to the face, which is always a good thing.
Jackets and blazers should hit anywhere but the widest point of your hips. That could mean right below the waist to mid-thigh, depending on your height. Wear jackets and blazers open for the best vertical lines.

Dresses

Look for dresses that nip in at the waist and slightly flare out over hips and thighs.
You can pull off a full-skirted ballgown because it will hide heavy hips and thighs.
Try sleeveless and strapless dresses to play up pretty shoulders and arms.
An empire, or raised waist dress brings the eye up away from problem areas. Careful, though. Sometimes this gets mistaken for a maternity look with fuller figures.

Top-heavy

The apple-shaped body is usually softer around the middle and has heavier breasts, with narrower hips and slimmer legs. Make the most of your womanly figure by showing off your legs and great cleavage.

Tops

Avoid too tight (plays up large breasts too much) and too baggy (just makes you look heavier). Opt for fabrics that skim the body, preferably knits and wovens with stretch for a better fit.
V-neck, boatneck, turtle and mock necks and shirt collars are your most flattering necklines.
Play up nice cleavage with a peek, not a Dolly Parton-sized slice. Especially appealing: a pretty lace-trimmed cami showing under a jacket or top.
Avoid full sleeves or puffy sleeves.

Bottoms

Balance out a top-heavy figure with an A-line skirt that will give you the look of a waist and more of an hourglass look.
Choose flat-front, never pleated, pants that have a lower rise than the natural waist.
Five-pocket jeans are your friend! Front pockets on jeans help disguise a tummy problem, while back pockets can help define a flatter rear common to top-heavy women.
Avoid anything too tight -- from pencil skirts to skintight jeans -- because it will only accentuate top heaviness.
Play up nice legs with shorter (an inch above the knee) skirts.

Dresses

One-piece dressing is tricky for you. Best bets: A sleeveless black sheath, a soft princess seamed dress, a strapless dress with corseted top.
Resist the urge to cover up head-to-toe: showing a little skin, whether it's bare arms or shoulders, is much more flattering.

Body basics for every figure

Wear colors that look great on you. Not sure what those are? Grab a trusted friend and head to the mall. Hold up tons of colors next to your face and get feedback from your friend. Hues that compliment most complexions: pink, blue, white (you'll just need to change the intensity of these colors to suit your coloring, i.e. hot pink for darker skins, carnation for fairer, ivory for olive tones, etc.)
Nobody looks good in high-waisted, pleated pants with narrow ankle openings, but manufacturers still turn these out in droves. Avoid!
Don't worry about being trendy when you look at what suits your figure: concentrate on what flatters, and add up-to-date shoes, handbags and accessories later.

Fashion's a breeze when you've got money to blow. But getting that fresh-from-the-runway look gets tricky when you're short on cash. Here's how to look good for less in a material world:

Redefine the word sale

Sounds basic, but to really save a bundle on clothes you have to be willing to pass up enticing promotions (15% off; free shipping; gift with purchase) and hold out for the hard-core sales (40% off is good; 50% and up will land you a buy for almost what it cost the retailer).

Don't stop buying

Counterintuitive? Well, think about dieting and how you pass on sweets and carbs until you binge. Scary, but it can happen with pent-up shopping desires, too (and credit card debt racked up in a binge will end up costing you a fortune). Satiate the fashion lover in you with a very small treat: you set the amount and frequency ($10 a month for new earrings, etc.) Pay with cash.

Shop in season

Sure, stuff is cheaper when bought at the end of the season or even out of season. And that's fine if you're just looking for any old thing to wear. But if you love fashion (and you do, or you wouldn't be here), you should shop as close to the season as possible. Otherwise you'll just waste your money on trends that will be out of style by the time the next year rolls around.

Swap with pals

Friends that wear your size (and share your taste) are a gold mine. You can even go large scale and organize a swap meet where everyone can switch shoes, clothes, etc.

Get rid of your inner snob

Scour second-hand and discount stores. Buy basics from the warehouse where you buy your paper towels in bulk. If vintage is your thing, haunt flea markets and garage sales.

Become a do-it-yourself whiz

Learn to whip together a new outfit on the sewing machine or simply turn old jeans into a new skirt. Recycling is an easy update: a ruffle on last year's skirt, a bow at the ankle of three-year-old strappy sandals.

How To Look Taller and Slimmer

You don't have to wear black everyday to look your sleekest. Try these simple figure flattering tips to elongate your body.

Difficulty: Easy

Time Required: Varies

Here's How:

Opt for a monochromatic outfit.
Add contrast color or texture with a blazer, cardigan or overshirt.
Leave the blazer or cardigan unbuttoned for maximum vertical lines.
Any stripes on the garment should be vertical.
Choose scarves tied loosely with long, vertical dangling ends.
Match pantyhose hue to skirt or pant and shoe color.
Avoid big belts, which can cut you in half visually.
Use long necklaces or pendants and avoid chokers.
Wear skirts that are longer than they are wide.
Choose shoes with at least an inch heel: the taller the better.
Elongate the neck with V-necks.

Tips:

Monochromatic doesn't have to mean boring. Mix textures to keep the look interesting (i.e. knits with leather)
If you are petite (5'3" or under) make sure you scale everything down : smaller prints, pockets, etc. so they don't overpower your figure.
Don't make the mistake of going for all long pieces. Go for contrasting proportions. Mix a longer jacket with a shorter skirt, shorter jacket with pants, etc.

Bottom-heavy

Bottoms

Avoid anything too tight.
A-line skirts that hit around the knee area are ideal because they draw attention away from problem areas. Miniskirts are generally a bad idea because they accentuate heavy thighs.
Pant waists should fall somewhere below the natural waistline for a better fit. A straight or slightly bootcut leg is the most flattering. Avoid patterned or light-colored pants. Skip fussy details like big cargo pockets, rouching or excessive zippers around the hip area.
Shorts can be tricky, but for workouts and casual wear choose lightweight, loose-fitting shorts (no bike shorts). Slimming side stripes on shorts can give the illusion of sleekness.

Tops

Avoid too-baggy tops or too-tight tops: the looser tops will make you look large all over, the tight tops will make you look out of proportion to your hips. Look for fitted -- not skintight -- T-shirts (something with some stretch) and button-front tops. V-necks, turtlenecks and open collars all call attention to the face, which is always a good thing.
Jackets and blazers should hit anywhere but the widest point of your hips. That could mean right below the waist to mid-thigh, depending on your height. Wear jackets and blazers open for the best vertical lines.

Dresses

Look for dresses that nip in at the waist and slightly flare out over hips and thighs.
You can pull off a full-skirted ballgown because it will hide heavy hips and thighs.
Try sleeveless and strapless dresses to play up pretty shoulders and arms.
An empire, or raised waist dress brings the eye up away from problem areas. Careful, though. Sometimes this gets mistaken for a maternity look with fuller figures.

Top-heavy

Tops

Avoid too tight (plays up large breasts too much) and too baggy (just makes you look heavier). Opt for fabrics that skim the body, preferably knits and wovens with stretch for a better fit.
V-neck, boatneck, turtle and mock necks and shirt collars are your most flattering necklines.
Play up nice cleavage with a peek, not a Dolly Parton-sized slice. Especially appealing: a pretty lace-trimmed cami showing under a jacket or top.
Avoid full sleeves or puffy sleeves.

Bottoms

Balance out a top-heavy figure with an A-line skirt that will give you the look of a waist and more of an hourglass look.
Choose flat-front, never pleated, pants that have a lower rise than the natural waist.
Five-pocket jeans are your friend! Front pockets on jeans help disguise a tummy problem, while back pockets can help define a flatter rear common to top-heavy women.
Avoid anything too tight -- from pencil skirts to skintight jeans -- because it will only accentuate top heaviness.
Play up nice legs with shorter (an inch above the knee) skirts.

Dresses

One-piece dressing is tricky for you. Best bets: A sleeveless black sheath, a soft princess seamed dress, a strapless dress with corseted top.
Resist the urge to cover up head-to-toe: showing a little skin, whether it's bare arms or shoulders, is much more flattering.

Body basics for every figure

Wear colors that look great on you. Not sure what those are? Grab a trusted friend and head to the mall. Hold up tons of colors next to your face and get feedback from your friend. Hues that compliment most complexions: pink, blue, white (you'll just need to change the intensity of these colors to suit your coloring, i.e. hot pink for darker skins, carnation for fairer, ivory for olive tones, etc.)
Nobody looks good in high-waisted, pleated pants with narrow ankle openings, but manufacturers still turn these out in droves. Avoid!
Don't worry about being trendy when you look at what suits your figure: concentrate on what flatters, and add up-to-date shoes, handbags and accessories later.

1. Skinny Jeans

For the trendy girl in you, skinny jeans are ideal. They're tough, they're racy, and they're very eye-catching. Pair with a dolman-sleeve sweater, a feminine top, or a preppy blazer (and don't forget pumps!)

2. Dark Wash Jeans

Super dark jeans -- in a dark blue rinse or light black -- are not only dressier, they make you look skinnier (and that's always a good thing).

3. Premium Jeans

Premium jeans are today's version of designer jeans. They have the coolest cuts and hottest labels (True Religion, Paige Denim, Chip & Pepper, Seven, etc.).

4. Vintage Jeans

Holes, bleached spots and frayed edges: they're a good thing! These vintage jeans are actually new just made to look old.

During one of my trips to New York City I had the privilege and opportunity to visit the ever so popular Cutler salon. Actually, there are two Cutler salons, one in the SoHo neighborhood which is the location I visited, and one uptown. They carry a line of hair products under their own name as well as the entire line of Redken products. I am a big fan of the Redken men’s line and it is through my friends at Redken that I learned about this super fashionable salon.

The stylist that helped me was Clyde, a gentle Greek man that oozed modern style. Aside from having Clyde help me update my own hairstyle, we discussed a variety of topics such as Reasons to Get Your Haircut at a Salon vs. a Barbershop and what’s in and what’sout in terms of men's hairstyles.

"In" Hairstyles:

Parted hair, or in other words, asymmetric styles ‘50s and ‘60s inspired hair
Hair that is longer, curly, wavy, and straight are all good
Hair that is shiny with texture on the ends
The ability to wear hair in different ways simply with the use of the right product
Movement in the hair (without length this is difficult)
The way to wear hair color now is in big chunks, not the faux sunkissed look. Big chunks of color give the hairstyle more texture.

"Out" Hairstyles:

Mullets were in for a brief time recently but are definitely out again
Faux-hawks have been used and abused – a tired look
Uniform shapes or symmetrical styles
Highlights that give hair that faux sunkissed look. The way to wear hair color now is in big chunks, giving the hairstyle more texture.

Curly hair is not a curse!

Professional Tips on How to Style Curly Hair

Some men feel like they're fighting a losing battle when it comes to combating the frizz, high volume and general wildness associated with curly hair, but if cared for properly, it can be their most striking feature! A luscious head of curly locks is definitely a head turner for me.

Patricia Morales, a top stylist for Redken, specializes in keeping male curly heads in Hollywood and on the runway looking sleek, shaped and sexy. This is what she has to say about controlling curly hair, so pay attention!

"Styling curly hair is really about two main things -- reducing frizz and defining curl, " she explains. "Most people get frustrated because they try to tame curl/volume when hair is dry which actually compounds the problem. It's crucial to coat curly hair with product when it's wet to block humidity and define the curl pattern, and once it dries it shouldn't be fussed with."

Morales’ technique is to work a large dose of de-frizzer/curl enhancer like Redken ringlet 07 curl perfector through semi-wet hair to discourage frizz and define the curl pattern. She then coils a couple curls around her fingers while using a diffuser attachment on a hair dryer until it is almost dry (hair can also be air dried). A defining pomade is then gently applied to the perimeter of the head (not through the hair, just on top) to separate and define curls and add shine. This style will last a couple days, especially on coarse hair styles. Finer hair should skip the last step and use a lighter product.

Morales also states that curly hair should not be washed everyday but every 2-3 days with a moisturizing shampoo for coarse unruly hair and conditioned with a moisturizing conditioner.

The stylist that helped me was Clyde, a gentle Greek man that oozed modern style. Aside from wanting an updated look which I knew Clyde could whip out without as much as a blink, I had some questions about why guys would want to choose a salon over a barbershop, and this was the perfect opportunity to get some answers. So as Clyde snipped away, we came up with the following 8 reasons why you might want to spend the extra money and go to a salon vs. the ol’ barbershop (which includes the Supercuts of the world).

You can have a great outfit but the look can be ruined with a bad or mediocre haircut.
It pays to put effort into having a good hairstyle since it is near your face and one of the first things people notice about you.
A good haircut and style is obvious, which shows you have some effort into your personal appearance.
Stylists at a salon typically have better and more training. After all, they usually have to go through an apprenticeship at a specific salon after beauty school.
A salon will have access and training in the latest styles and can help you achieve more fashion forward looks (if that is what you are after).
A good cut and style will allow you more flexibility in terms of using different products to achieve different looks.

The right hairstyle can give you self-confidence and satisfaction. Finding the right hairstyle for who you are does take a little effort though, but the results will be worth it in the end. As with any good relationship, the key to getting a great haircut is proper communication between you and your hairstylist. So before your haircut, you should have a consultation with your stylist during which time you should discuss various aspects of your hair and lifestyle. With that said, here are seven tips on how to get the haircut you want and deserve.

Do I Need a Matchmaking Service?
Finding a good stylist can be like searching for your next girlfriend. Ask around and find out which stylist or salon your friends use, or you can ask someone whose hair you admire. Perhaps you have seen a salon around town that looks cool and you’ve been wanting to give it a try. In this case I would call them up and ask if they specialize in a certain types of haircuts or styles. Would they consider themselves to be modern or classic in their attitude toward style? Edgy or conservative?

Don’t Be Shy
You might want to call or drop in a salon and ask if the stylists will give a free consultation before you make an appointment. Find out what their style is and the kind of cuts they are particularly good at cutting. Maybe they are better at certain types of styles than others or maybe they typically do women’s hair. It’s good to find these things out before they start whacking at your hair.

What’s Your Fuss Factor?
Let your stylist know how much time you spend on your hair. Maybe you aren’t fussy with your hair, or perhaps you only allow a certain amount of time for hair during your morning routine. Are you proficient with a blow-dryer, or do you prefer the natural route? What kinds of styling aids are you used to using?

What Do You Mean No Mohawks at the Office?
It’s also important for them to know what your lifestyle is like. Do you work in a conservative environment? Are you a man about town and fashion forward? Ultimately your stylist needs to know how comfortable you are wearing your hair. And make sure you're both on the same page when you get down to details. For example, your stylist may interpret "shaggy” or “shorter on the sides" much differently than you do.

I Didn’t Know My Hair Could Do That!
Make sure your stylist shows you how to best style your hair. Do they use the hairdryer in a particular way? What kind of products did they use in your hair? If your stylist doesn't explain what he/she is doing, don't hesitate to ask for an explanation of a technique or term they use. Understanding the language or terminology is key.

Lights, Camera . . .
A picture is worth a thousand words and a great way to start the conversation. The stylist I have interviewed say that more and more male clients are bringing in photos from magazines and such. With photos your stylist will be able to assess how suitable the cut you like is for your hair, your face shape and lifestyle. They can also suggest alternatives if it's not the perfect cut for you.

Money Money Money
Tip appropriately or you may not want your stylist to have a pair scissors near your face the next time you drop in. A Proper tip is 15% to 20% for your stylist & $5 for the person who washes your hair, if someone other than your stylist is doing so.

There is something alluring about pink. Maybe that’s because psychologically it is known to have a calming effect. Or maybe it’s because pink is complimentary to most skin tones, unless you already have a lot of pink tone in your skin (like me). Or maybe it’s because a man who wears pink exudes confidence, yet is sensitive. It could be as simple as the fact that pink is easy to coordinate with almost every color in your wardrobe--it goes amazingly well with greys, tans, black, navys and other blues tones. And lastly, if you're still not convinced how great pink is, women love pink and are more likely to give you a second glance. So give pink a try if you haven’t already. I have outlined four ways you can incorporate this magical color into your wardrobe.

Sweaters
If you haven’t seen the movie “Brown Sugar,” you need to just to see how great a pink sweater can look. In a party scene, the actor Boris Kodjoe wears a pink crew-neck cashmere sweater with dark trousers, and I must say it is such a sexy look. It proves how something as classic and simple as a pink sweater can be show stopper.

Pink dress shirts are one of the easiest ways to incorporate pink into your wardrobe. They are easily worn with suits, under sweaters or on their own with trousers or jeans. I will say that at my office there is a man who often wears pink dress shirts. He gets many compliments whenever he does because it breathes new life into his suits and makes him look more distinguished. It’s a winning look.

Spring and summer would be the time to wear pink suits and trousers. I know you may be having a hard time visualizing this, but when I say suits and trousers I mean seersucker or light cotton. It’s the perfect thing to wear at a summer wedding or party.

Accessories and T-shirts
If you can’t commit to a more substantial item in pink, start small. Ties, t-shirts, hats (like a pink Kangol) or a scarf with pink stripes would be the way to go.
